Obtaining A Lost U S Passport Replacement While Traveling Overseas

When traveling abroad in a foreign country, even the simplest tasks can be more complicated. When there is a language barrier, things become even more difficult. You can imagine how a normally difficult task in your home country, such as lost passports replacement, can be a stressful thing to deal with while traveling. In order to make the process run as smoothly as possible, it is best to be prepared ahead of time.

Most people would never leave on a vacation without first packing their bags, making reservations at a hostel or hotel and saving up a little bit of spending money. So why would you leave on vacation without taking all the necessary precautions to deal with a lost passport? A little bit of planning can help tremendously in a complicated situation like applying for a replacement Emergency American Passport in a foreign country.

Before leaving your home country, you should make copies of everything. You should pack your passport, credit cards and ID in a different bag than the copies you made. If your backpack with all of your important documents gets stolen, you will still have the copies to prove to the embassy that you are who you claim to be.

Another thing you should do before leaving on your trip is set money aside for such a situation. Many people have an emergency fund in case of a medical accident or stolen travelers checks. Prepare for a situation where your passport and credit cards are lost or stolen by talking with a friend about the possibility of them lending you money to replace the passport.

If you are already traveling and you notice your passport missing, you should immediately call local authorities to report it. If it was stolen they can begin searching for the person who stole it. Often times you cannot get a new passport until you have officially reported your original one missing.

If you have computer access, you should log onto the American embassy’s website and download a DS-11 form. Fill out the form and bring it with you to the embassy. This form, along with identification and a fee will allow you to get a new passport. Original identification cards such as a driver’s license will work best, but if you only have photocopied versions, bring those.

You will be required to pay a fee for the passport. Without paying this fee you cannot receive the document. If your money was stolen or lost with the passport, you should contact family and friends to see if they can wire you money.

Losing your passport should not mean that you have to miss or delay flights. Furthermore, lost passport replacement can be a speedy process if you are adequately prepared ahead of time to deal with the situation. Expedite the process with Emergency Pass Port services. This way, you’ll get a temporary passport in time to make it onto your flight.

Replacing a Lost Passport Overseas

A lost passport is inconvenient enough when you’re at home, but when you’re overseas it can be terrifying. After all, you need your passport to get home, and being stranded in a foreign country with no ID is just not fun. Fortunately, you can get your lost passport replaced quickly if you take the proper steps to do so.

The procedure for replacing a passport while overseas is different from the procedure for replacing a lost passport in the United States. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Contact your nearest US Embassy. It’s a good idea to make a note of where the nearest US embassy is and get its contact information before you travel. You can look up this information here.

You will need to visit the embassy or consulate in person and provide information to verify your identity, including your name, your birthday, where you were born, your passport number, and when and where your lost passport was issued to you. This is why experts recommend that you make copies of your passport’s information pages and carry them separately from the actual document. The embassy will do its best to help you obtain and verify any information you don’t have.

If you don’t have any proof of identification, you may need to get a traveling companion to vouch for you.

If you’re completely alone, your friends or family may be able to contact the embassy and confirm your identity.

You will need to pay the standard passport fees, but if you don’t have money and there’s no way for you to get access to funds before you are supposed to leave, the Embassy may issue you a free passport good only for 3 months.

Passports are not issued on weekends or holidays; however, there is always one officer on duty for life and death emergencies and if you have an urgent situation the officer may be able to make arrangements with your airline and immigration to have you transported home to the US without a passport. However, this is not guaranteed.

You’ll need new photos, and the embassy will direct you on where to get them.

Suggestions For United States Passport Replacement While Traveling Overseas

If you are traveling abroad and have lost your passport or if you are afraid that it has been stolen and you need pass port replacement, by following a few steps, you can have a new passport in your hand and be ready to travel again. By working with the United States Consulate office in the country you are visiting, you can be heading back to your travels rather quickly. Remain calm and you will find you will be able to think more clearly and get through the process quickly.

There a couple of different ways you can find the consulate office. You can ask for help at the hotel where you are staying. They will likely be able to point you in the right direction. If not, the information is available on the Internet by visiting the U. S. Department of State. If Internet access is an issue for you, you might consider contacting a family member or friend that is back home and is able to go on the Internet and look it up for you.

When you arrive at the consulate, you will be required to fill out a new passport application. The consulate officer will interview you as a means to verify who you are. He will very likely ask questions including your name, date of birth, and place that you were born. You may also be asked for your passport number and the location and date that you applied for your passport. In the event you have a photocopy of the passport that was lost or stolen, be sure that you bring it with you to the consulate. It will provide them with much of the information that they need to expedite the process for you.

The officer will also as you to provide some form of proof of your identity. Try not to worry if your paperwork with this type of information was lost or stolen with your passport. There are other ways that the consulate can confirm your identity. If you are traveling with others, they may be interviewed. He may allow you to call family members or close friends in the US so that he can speak to them. Another option that the officer may use is to review your previous passport application.

Usually the replacements that are issued are valid for the full 10 years that any passport is valid for. If there is any doubt in the consular officers mind as to your identity and there is not time to wait for the State Department’s verification, a limited 3 month passport may be issued. If this happens, than once the applicant returns to the United States, they will be required to apply for and pay for a regular passport.

You will be asked to pay the usual fees to the consulate for the replacement. In the event that all of your money was stolen with your passport or if you were a victim of a disaster and you do not have the money, you will be issued a passport with limitations so that you can return to the United States. You will then have to reapply and pay the fees for a new one.

The consulate operates during normal business hours and is closed evenings, weekends and holidays. The officers that are available during these times are there only to handle the most extreme emergencies. They cannot assist with your passport needs. If you are not able to wait until the next day that they will be open for regular business, the officers may be able to help you in other ways that will allow you to return to the United States.

If your passport is lost or stolen while you are traveling, do not panic. Contact the US Consulate office and provide them with as much information for the US passport application forms as they need and they will issue you a pasport replacement, usually in a timely fashion.
