Gold Rush Reality

This summer, I found myself in the small town of Ross, where the largest gold nugget in New Zealand was discovered. I went to the famous stream where it was found, felt a stroke of good luck and rented a pan and shovel. Almost immediately, I saw little flakes of gold. I couldnt believe my luck. Within 20 minutes, I found a little clunker the size of a lima bean. I raced over to where my girlfriend was panning to show it to her. Instead, I slipped on a wet rock, skinned my knee and fell into the frigid stream. The nugget was lost forever. I didnt even keep enough gold flakes to cover the $ 5 I spent renting the panthus ended another unprofitable mining investment. Then again, gold mining isnt really a business. For the most part, its a way for some friends to goof off and play with heavy machinery. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar. For this reason, I was intrigued to learn that the Discovery Channel has a new reality show called Gold Rush Alaska.
Ive watched a few episodes now. Its intoxicating. You have the crazy old geologist whos convinced he knows where the gold is. He uses his backhoe to dig holes all over the mining camp. You have the foreman who doesnt have a clue how to motivate or coordinate his people. You have the engineer who spends most of his time correcting his prior mistakes. You have the moody employee whos always about to quit. In general, you have a half dozen grown men who have no capital, no plan and big dreams. It reminds me so much of real mining, right down to the subtextwhere will we get more money from so that we can get to the next phase and finally make some money?
During the most recent episode, they couldnt get the shaker table to work. It was costing them $ 1,000 a day while they messed with it. Finally, out of desperation, they called in a professional and paid for his expenses. This isnt too different from real mining, except everything is bigger. In real mining, you lose tens of thousands a day and the problems cannot be fixed with just a blowtorch. When your ball mill breaks, you might be down for two months and it might cost you millions in lost revenue plus millions more to fix it.

After more than a month of watching this, no one has found any gold. They dont even know where to look for the gold. The good news is that they are convinced that they have the best geologist, the best mining engineer and the best deposit. Heck, all theyre missing is a world class IR guy and a few newsletters that have been paid nickel stock to promote the thing. Silly amateurs! Dont they realize that mining has nothing to do with actually producing gold? Its about promoting a dream and selling out your cheap stock. Thats where the real money is. I hope they have a good shell to roll this scheme into. Discovery Channel already did an amazing promote.
After watching this show, I have further increased my resolve not to invest in these penny stock mining plays. They arent businesses. Theyre just money pits. How many of these things ever earn their cost of capital? Dont be sucked into the morass. There are a few good companies and a few capable CEOs, but for the most part you dont want to play in this game. The only winners are the stock promoters.

Many of these stocks have gone straight up in the past year. There are hot sectors. Anyone want rare earth metals? What about lithium or uranium? Just remember, these are speculative trading toystake profits along the way. Never think you know what youre doing just because you made some money recently. As an investor, think of them like burning matches. Eventually, they all go poof, and its gone. I dont care how many pounds of uranium someone claims to own. Until they build and operate the mine for a few years, its not a business. Only when you hit steady state production, do you even have something to analyze.
Kudos to the Discovery Channeltheyve encapsulated the experience of junior mininga half dozen likeable guys who are down on their luck and hoping to strike it rich. You just want them to succeedmaybe youd even give them the $ 50,000 they need to get into “production.” No gold, no clue, no way out. Thats mining for you. The only quibble I have is that theyre operating a mine in pristine wilderness next to a streamyou cant have a mining operation without an environmentalist trying to shut you down. Where are the greens? It isnt a mining project until youve sunk millions into it and then lost your water discharge permit. Then again, maybe that is still to comeIm only four episodes in. I can’t wait until next week when something else breaks and they’re still just one episode away from making a profit.

Foreclosure Data Update

Foreclosure activity climbed in three-quarters of the nation’s largest metro areas in the first half of the year compared to the same time a year ago, however Foreclosure Properties declined in some of the hardest hit regions, RealtyTrac reported on Thursday.

The report found that 154 of the 206 metro areas with a population of 200,000 or more posted year-over-year increases in foreclosure activity, which covers everything from the time borrowers, receive a default to the sale of the property via auction or on the traditional real estate market.

The 20 areas with the worst foreclosure rates were in the four states that were most devastated by the housing crisis — Florida, California, Nevada and Arizona. Those were the states where prices climbed the fastest during the boom years and therefore crashed the hardest. Nine of the areas on the top 20 list were in Florida, eight in California, two in Nevada and one in Arizona.

Foreclosure actions took place on more than 1.6 million properties in the first half of the year, the company said. Even in the areas where foreclosures rates are down, the rates still remain three to five times higher than the national average.

Foreclosures tend to drag down home prices, complicating the housing market’s struggle to recover. The housing rebound that economists once expected in the last half of this year will most likely not come so soon. The nation’s stubbornly high unemployment rate and the lenders’ increased willingness to sell more foreclosed properties to the public will most likely increase the number of foreclosures hitting the market.

For a period, lenders held onto homes they had foreclosed upon as they came under political pressure to try and modify the loans of troubled borrowers. But as they get a better handle on which loans are unsalvageable, lenders are starting to complete more foreclosures and put them on the market, several economists have said.

But there are early signs that foreclosure activity may have peaked in some of the most troubled regions, James J. Saccacio, RealtyTrac’s chief executive, said in a statement. Foreclosure activity dropped in nine of the top 10 most severely affected areas.

The Las Vegas area still has the nation’s highest foreclosure rate, with 6.6 percent of its housing units (or 53,525 properties) receiving a foreclosure filing in the first half of the year. But that’s a 15 percent decrease from the comparable period a year ago and a 9 percent decrease from the first half of the year.

Foreclosure activity in the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla. metro area, which had the nation’s second highest metro foreclosure rate at 4.98 percent, also slipped. The foreclosure rate there in the first half of the year is down 30 percent from a year ago and 22 percent from the previous six months.

The report collects data from 2,200 counties nationwide that make up more than 90 percent of the U.S. population. Some of the Foreclosure Properties filings captured in the first half of this year may have been recorded in previous time periods.

An Emergency Passport Office or an Expediting Company?

emergency passport
by TijsB

If you’re in a real hurry to get your passport, you have two choices: use a private passport expediting company or go to an emergency passport office. Each of these choices has pros and cons, and it’s important to consider how these relate to your own situation so you can make the best choice. Here, then, is a quick run-down of the advantages and disadvantages of each option:

Emergency Passport Offices

An emergency passport office, also called a Regional Passport Agency office, is a special passport office that is able to issue passports usually within 24 hours. There are currently 21 of these offices scattered throughout the country, and the government is in the process of constructing more of them to keep up with demand. See What to Bring to An Emergency Passport Office for more details.

There are several advantages to using an emergency passport office:

No extra fees, other than the $ 60 expediting fee you pay for expedited passport service.

Same-day service is available in many locations.

However, there are also some disadvantages:

There are only 21 emergency passport offices in the country, so if you aren’t located near one getting there can be a hassle.

You can’t walk in-you have to make an appointment by calling 1-877-487-2778.

Limited office hours mean that if you work during the day, you will likely have to take time off to go.

Taking time off work and traveling can incur their own expenses.

Passport Expediting Companies

Private passport expediting companies are private companies that submit your application on your behalf, directly to the Department of State.

Using a reputable expediting company has the following advantages:

No appointment needed-just go down to a post office, library or other location that accepts passport applications, have your documents sealed and mail your application in.

No need to travel or take time off work.

The best expediting companies offer real-time tracking of your application and personal service to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Processing times can be as short as 24 hours.

The most common disadvantages to using an expediting company are as follows:

Cost: Expediters charge for their services. The sooner you need your passport, the more you can expect to pay.

Processing times can be as short as 24 hours but the need to ship the application means that it may take more than 24 hours to get your passport back, even with the fastest shipping options available.
