Travel rules are changing, and soon, you’ll need a REAL ID to fly within the United States or get into certain federal buildings. If you still have a regular driver’s license or state ID, here’s what you need to know to be prepared.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state ID card that meets new federal security standards. It was introduced to enhance security and make using a fake ID to board an airplane, enter certain federal buildings, or access military bases harder.

Why is This Important?

Starting May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID or a passport to fly within the U.S. or enter certain federal facilities. Your regular driver’s license or state ID won’t be accepted for these purposes after this date.

REAL ID vs. Basic State ID: What’s the Difference?

  • REAL ID: Marked with a star in the upper corner, indicating it meets federal standards. You can use it for domestic flights and access to federal buildings.
  • Basic State ID/Driver’s License: Without the star, it won’t be valid for flying or entering secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025. You would need a passport or another acceptable form of ID.

How Do You Get a REAL ID?

  1. Visit your state’s DMV. You can start the process online, but you’ll need to complete it in person.
  2. Bring Required Documents:
    • Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
    • Proof of Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2 form)
    • Two documents proving your state residency (e.g., utility bills or a lease)
  3. Receive Your REAL ID. It’s typically mailed to you within a few weeks.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!

With the May 7, 2025, deadline approaching, act now to avoid long lines and delays. Make an appointment at your DMV and gather the necessary documents to ensure you’re ready for your next flight or visit to a federal facility.

Using Your Passport for Domestic Flights

You can still fly within the United States using your passport if you don’t have a REAL ID. A valid U.S. passport is accepted as an alternative form of identification for domestic flights. This means you can board a plane without a REAL ID if you have your passport. So, if you’ve already got a passport, you’re all set to travel, even after the new regulations take effect.
