Can you get a passport without your previous passport? Yes, in many cases. However, the steps depend on whether you are applying for your first passport, replacing a lost passport, or renewing an expired one.

If you cannot find your old passport, you may need to provide additional documents or complete a different application form.

Knowing the steps can help you avoid delays, especially if you have an upcoming trip.

Can You Apply for a Passport Without Your Old One?

Yes, but you need to follow the process that matches your situation.

For example, you may need to report a lost or stolen passport before applying for a replacement. If your passport is damaged, you may need to submit it with your application.

The requirements also depend on whether you are applying for a first passport or replacing one you already had.

What to Do if Your Passport Is Lost or Stolen

If your passport is missing, you should report it to the U.S. Department of State. Once reported, the passport is no longer valid for travel, even if you find it later.

To replace a lost or stolen passport, you generally need to:

  1. Report the passport as lost or stolen using Form DS-64, or complete the applicable reporting section of your application.

  2. Complete Form DS-11 to apply for a replacement passport.

  3. Provide proof of U.S. citizenship, identification, a passport photo, and any other required documents.

  4. Submit your application through an authorized acceptance facility or another eligible passport service location.

Check the current State Department instructions to confirm which forms and documents you need.

What If Your Passport Is Expired and You Cannot Find It?

If your old passport has expired and you no longer have it, you may still be able to apply for a replacement passport.

However, you cannot use the missing passport as your renewal document. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to apply in person using Form DS-11 rather than using the standard renewal process.

You will generally need to provide proof of citizenship, such as an eligible U.S. birth certificate or naturalization certificate, along with identification and other required materials.

The State Department determines which application process applies to your situation.

Can You Get a Passport Without Your Previous Passport if It Is Damaged?

Yes, you may be able to replace a damaged passport. The process depends on the type and extent of the damage.

If your passport is damaged, do not assume you can renew it through the regular process. You may need to submit the damaged passport with an application for a replacement.

Damage that affects the passport’s identifying information, photo, or security features may prevent you from using it for travel.

Review the State Department’s instructions for damaged passports before applying.

    What Documents Do You Need?

The documents you need depend on your application type. Common requirements include:
