If the State Department rejects your passport photo, it will send you a letter or email and put your application on hold until you send a new photo. You have 90 days to respond. Get a new photo that meets every rule, send it to the address on the letter, and your application moves again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new photo is the part you don’t want to get wrong twice. We take passport photos at our offices every day, for $10<\/strong>, and we know exactly what the State Department looks for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most common passport delays? A rejected photo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A rejected photo is one of the most common delays we see. It’s frustrating, but it’s fixable. Most rejections come down to a handful of mistakes, and you can avoid every one of them on the retake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why passport photos get rejected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The State Department’s photo rules<\/a> are strict, so even a small mistake can send a photo back. These are the reasons we see most:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The size or position is off<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The photo must be 2 x 2 inches, with your head 1 to 1 3\/8 inches from chin to top of head and centered in the frame. A face that’s too large, too small, or off-center won’t pass. Standing too close to the camera, or too far away, is a common cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadows or poor lighting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Uneven light, shadows across your face or the wall, or a dark photo can all lead to rejection. The image has to be clear and show your skin tone accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The background isn’t plain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You need a plain white or off-white background. Textures, patterns, colored walls, or objects behind you won’t pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re wearing glasses or accessories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Glasses aren’t allowed, unless a doctor’s signed note says you can’t remove them. Hats and head coverings also have to come off, unless you wear them for religious or medical reasons and include a signed statement. Headphones and earbuds aren’t allowed either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your expression or eyes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You can have a neutral expression or a natural smile, but keep your mouth closed and both eyes open. A big toothy smile, raised eyebrows, or closed eyes can get a photo sent back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo was edited or printed badly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Filters, beauty apps, retouching, and AI edits aren’t allowed. Neither are blurry or pixelated prints, photocopies, scans, or prints on regular paper. Even fixing red-eye counts as editing, so retake the photo instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when a passport photo is rejected?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The State Department puts your application on hold and sends a letter or email asking for a new photo. Here’s what to do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Read the letter closely.<\/strong> It says what was wrong and how to send the new photo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Get a new photo<\/strong> that fixes the problem. It must be less than 6 months old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Send it to the full mailing address on the letter<\/strong>, not to a passport agency’s street address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Respond within 90 days<\/strong> of the date on the letter. The sooner you reply, the sooner processing resumes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Your application stays on hold until the State Department gets the new photo, so the clock on your trip keeps running. That’s why the retake is worth getting right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
