Congress is moments away from deciding if there will be a government shutdown come Saturday the 21st. Many passport applicants and travelers are wondering if a potential government shutdown will affect their travel plans. The big question\u2014will the government shutdown affect getting a passport?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is a Government Shutdown?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to approve funding for federal agencies by a set deadline. Without this funding, some government services stop until the budget is approved, but essential services, like national security, continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shutdown is expected to start on Saturday, the 30th<\/strong>, with effects beginning Monday, the start of the workweek<\/strong>, unless Congress reaches an agreement. There\u2019s no set end date, but it might last until the new fiscal year begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
