Applying for a U.S. passport involves submitting specific documents based on your situation. To simplify the process, here\u2019s a quick breakdown of what you\u2019ll need, whether you\u2019re applying for your first passport, renewing, or replacing a lost one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. First-Time Passport Applicants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For first-time applicants, you’ll use form\u00a0DS-11<\/a>, which<\/span> can be found on the State Department’s\u00a0website. Print and complete the form by hand (black ink only), or type the application using the online form filler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will need to make an in-person appointment at a passport acceptance facility<\/a>. This is because first-time passport applicants must have their identity verified by an agent. The DS-11 must be completed but not signed until an agent verifies your identity. Make sure you bring the original documents or certified copies when applying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will also need these documents for a New Passport:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proof of Citizenship<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

 U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Passport Renewals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you are renewing your passport, Complete the DS-82<\/a> form. Print and complete the form by hand (using black ink only), or type the application using the online form filler<\/a>. Make sure to sign the form before submitting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To renew your passport by mail<\/strong><\/em>, you’ll have to print the form and ma<\/span>il it with your application<\/span>. There is also the option for online passport renewal<\/strong><\/em>, but it has different eligibility requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
