If you still have a regular driver\u2019s license or state ID, here\u2019s what you need to know to be prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a REAL ID?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;A REAL ID is a driver&#8217;s license or state ID card that meets new federal security standards. It was introduced to enhance security and make using a fake ID to board an airplane, enter certain federal buildings, or access military bases harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is This Important?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID or a passport to fly within the U.S. or enter certain federal facilities. Your regular driver\u2019s license or state ID won\u2019t be accepted for these purposes after this date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">REAL ID vs. Basic State ID: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>REAL ID:<\/strong> Marked with a star in the upper corner, indicating it meets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/real-id\">federal standards<\/a>. You can use it for domestic flights and access to federal buildings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Basic State ID\/Driver\u2019s License:<\/strong> Without the star, it won\u2019t be valid for flying or entering secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025. You would need a passport or another acceptable form of ID.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do You Get a REAL ID?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visit your state\u2019s DMV.<\/strong> You can start the process online, but you\u2019ll need to complete it in person.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bring Required Documents:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or passport)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2 form)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two documents proving your state residency (e.g., utility bills or a lease)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Receive Your REAL ID.<\/strong> It\u2019s typically mailed to you within a few weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t Wait Until the Last Minute!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With the May 7, 2025, deadline approaching, act now to avoid long lines and delays.
