If you’ve changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or another legal reason, you should update your passport before traveling. The process depends on how recently your passport was issued and the type of name change you need.
Time Limits for Name Changes Without Applying for a New Passport
If your passport was issued less than a year ago, you can update your name for free using Form DS-5504. You’ll need to submit an original or certified copy of the legal document showing your name change (such as a marriage certificate or court order).
If your passport was issued more than a year ago, you’ll need to apply for a renewal using Form DS-82 and pay the standard renewal fees.
For Newlyweds
If you’ve recently gotten married and changed your last name, you’ll need to update your passport before traveling under your new name. To do this:
- Submit Form DS-5504 if your passport is less than a year old or Form DS-82 if it’s older.
- Include an original or certified marriage certificate.
- Send your current passport along with the application.
If you need your passport fast for a honeymoon or upcoming travel, The Passport Office has quick services available.
Name Change After Divorce
If you are reverting to your maiden name after a divorce, follow the same process:
- Use Form DS-5504 if your passport is less than a year old or Form DS-82 if it’s older.
- Provide a certified divorce decree that states your name change.
- Include your current passport and a passport photo.
Name and Gender Marker Changes on a Passport
For those updating both their name and gender marker, the U.S. Department of State allows gender marker changes without requiring medical documentation. You can now select M, F, or X (for non-binary, intersex, or other gender identities). To update your passport:
- Submit Form DS-11 (for a new passport) or Form DS-82 (for a renewal).
- Provide a certified court order or other legal document for your name change.
- Select your preferred gender marker (M, F, or X).
- Include your current passport, passport photo, and applicable fees.
