Why is This Important?
Starting May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID or a passport to fly within the U.S. or enter certain federal facilities. Your regular driver’s license or state ID won’t be accepted for these purposes after this date.
REAL ID vs. Basic State ID: What’s the Difference?
- REAL ID: Marked with a star in the upper corner, indicating it meets federal standards. You can use it for domestic flights and access to federal buildings.
- Basic State ID/Driver’s License: Without the star, it won’t be valid for flying or entering secure federal facilities after May 7, 2025. You would need a passport or another acceptable form of ID.
How Do You Get a REAL ID?
- Visit your state’s DMV. You can start the process online, but you’ll need to complete it in person.
- Bring Required Documents:
- Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2 form)
- Two documents proving your state residency (e.g., utility bills or a lease)
- Receive Your REAL ID. It’s typically mailed to you within a few weeks.
