This far, the transfer rules of the United States of America were not pretty pleasant for the students in the middle of a course to say the least. When the matter was regarding an intra-state transfer, things looked pretty normal where students were allowed to carry on with their courses without losing any credit and as such without any hiccups. But when it was about an inter-state transfer, it meant that the students who were enforced to change their location in the middle of a course would have to lose quite a few credits if not the entire ones forcing them to start all over again from the block.

The Interstate Passport aims at eliminating the problems related to the students regarding the transfer process. To put some more light on this matter, the aim is simple enough. This Interstate Passport looks at eliminating the unnecessary repetition of the course already taken by the students. Although this is an initiative which has been started as an experiment but for now, the students who will be moving between colleges of the member states of the Interstate passport Member Institutions will not have to repeat the courses which they have already studied.

This has come as a welcome boon for the students especially the low income and first generation students who can barely afford the courses for the first time. Earlier it was impossible for them to continue courses by starting the entire thing all over again. It was looked up to as a significant hurdle for these students and as such the drop-out rates kept on increasing day by day. As many students especially belonging to the above mentioned category had to move due to reasons like a job, family, military and several other related reasons. As these shifts were inevitable, this definitely resulted in career loss for some and significantly stand-stills for the rest.

As per the experts, this initiative has come as a welcome change and everybody is looking forward to the fact that this would reduce the drop-out rates significantly and many students, mostly the ones pursuing graduation and further will definitely have more opportunities of completion of their respective courses and fulfil their dreams.

As per recent statistics, more than 60% of the students belonging to the community colleges are being able to transfer most of their credits but there are around 15% who still are not being able to transfer any credits. The same research suggests that the students who are able to transfer most of their credits have 2.5 times more chances for the completion of their respective degrees.

For now only 9 areas are available for this passport learning outcomes. These specific areas are Oral Communication, Written Communication, Quantitative Literacy, Natural Sciences, Human Cultures, Human Society and the Individual, Creative Expression, Critical Thinking, and Teamwork and Value Systems.

For now only seven states are participating in this positive initiative but the other states would be eagerly awaiting the results, especially the increase in the completion rates in order to implement this inevitable move. Let’s hope that there is a serious impact of this initiative on the society as a whole.
